Queens, New York – In a recent federal court ruling, a Queens family has been convicted for operating an extensive sex trafficking network, spanning years and involving numerous young women and girls, primarily from Mexico.
The family, comprising Luz Elvira Cardona, 35, Jose Facundo Zarate Morales, 34, Blanca Hernandez Morales, 53, and Roberto Cesar Cid Dominguez, 60, were found guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court after a four-week jury trial.
The criminal operation, which began in 2002, preyed on vulnerable young women and girls, luring them to the United States with false promises of a better life and legitimate employment. Instead, they were coerced into prostitution through a combination of force, threats, and deception. One shocking instance involved Cardona bringing her 15-year-old niece from Mexico under the guise of a cleaning job, only to force her into prostitution upon arrival in Queens.
This criminal enterprise operated across New York State and Connecticut, compelling the victims, including minors, to engage in prostitution with numerous clients daily. Federal officials highlighted the grave nature of these crimes, involving the transportation of minors, sex trafficking, extortion, and promotion of prostitution, among other charges. Each family member faces severe penalties, with potential life sentences for most and up to 40 years in prison for Cid Dominguez.
Additionally, the case revealed the involvement of Village of Brewster Police Officer Wayne Peiffer, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges for providing protection to the NYC sex trafficking ring in exchange for sexual favors. His sentencing is still pending.
US Attorney Breon Peace commented on the verdict, emphasizing its significance in dismantling a heinous NYC sex trafficking ring and providing justice and hope for the recovery of the victims. This case stands as a stark reminder of the horrors of human trafficking and the importance of legal and social support systems for the survivors.
