On October 16, 2023, the Justice Department announced that an ex-California policeman was sentenced to 33 months in prison. Former San Diego vice detective, Peter Griffin, 79, was convicted for running a network of illicit massage businesses. His establishments, masquerading as therapeutic services, were fronts for commercial sex trafficking operations across California and Arizona.
Griffin, exploiting his law enforcement background, managed these illegal ventures with three associates: Kyung Sook Hernandez, Yu Hong Tan, and Yoo Jin Ott, who received six-month sentences. They operated five spas, including “Genie Oriental Spa” and “Felicita Spa,” from 2013 to 2022, engaging in activities like online solicitation and financial fraud, contributing to a large-scale sex trade.
Kristen Clarke, Assistant Attorney General, condemned Griffin for breaching his oath by exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit. Various officials emphasized the repulsiveness of Griffin’s actions, highlighting his manipulation of authority to circumvent the law. He utilized his former status to deceive regulatory bodies, even brandishing his old badge to ward off suspicions.
These crimes weren’t without resistance, as one woman’s refusal to comply was met with coercion, indicative of the ruthless environment employees endured. Griffin’s past in the Vice Operations Unit cemented the irony, as he once fought against the crimes he later perpetuated.
The case, a collective effort of multiple government agencies and local police departments in California, underscores a commitment to dismantling human trafficking networks and ensuring justice for the exploited.
