WASHOE COUNTY, California — In a case highlighting the alarming prevalence of sex trafficking and exploitation, Jacob Barbato, a 32-year-old resident of California, has been handed a 40-year prison sentence for charges related to sex trafficking and attempted sexual assault of a minor. The announcement was made by the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday, April 18th, 2024.
Barbato’s activities came to light through a concerted effort by law enforcement, particularly the Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit (HEAT), a specialized task force dedicated to combating sex trafficking and related crimes. During their investigation, it was uncovered that Barbato had recruited an undercover detective, posing as a 17-year-old, with the promise of financial compensation in exchange for sexual favors.
Barbato was further exposed when he attempted to involve minors in his illicit activities. According to reports from the DA’s office, Barbato requested the detective to arrange sexual encounters with individuals he believed to be teenagers, including a 15-year-old acquaintance and a 13-year-old female. He even proposed filming these encounters, offering drugs as an incentive.
The HEAT team, a collaborative effort comprising multiple law enforcement agencies in the Truckee Meadows region, played a pivotal role in uncovering Barbato’s criminal activities and ensuring his apprehension. Their dedication underscores the critical importance of specialized units in combatting sex trafficking and related offenses.
