California Moves to Strengthen Child Sex Trafficking Laws

Sacramento, California – California lawmakers are intensifying their efforts to combat child sex trafficking by advancing legislation that would increase penalties for adults who exploit minors. The new measure, Assembly Bill 379, aims to close a critical legal gap and strengthen protections for vulnerable teens nationwide.

Lawmakers Advance Key Anti-Trafficking Bill

On Monday, the California Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously passed Assembly Bill 379 with a 6-0 vote. The bill proposes making it a felony for any adult more than three years older to purchase sex from a 16- or 17-year-old. Previously, felony charges were only automatic if the victim was under 16 or if trafficking could be proven.

AB 379 reinstates criminal penalties for loitering with the intent to purchase sex and raises financial penalties for businesses involved in trafficking. The proposal includes funding for survivor support. Despite concerns from immigration advocates, the bill cleared the committee and now awaits a full Senate vote before potentially reaching Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.

How to Take Action if Your Child Is a Victim of Sex Trafficking

If your child or someone you care about might be a victim of child sex trafficking, here are the essential steps you can take to protect them and seek justice:

  1. Ensure your child’s immediate safety. Relocate them to a secure and trusted environment. Prioritize medical care and trauma-informed support.
  2. Contact law enforcement. File a police report with your local police department or sheriff’s office. Be clear about suspected trafficking and provide any known details.
  3. Report to national hotlines. Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “BEFREE” (233733). These services offer confidential help and can connect you with local resources.
  4. Preserve evidence. Save any text messages, emails, social media activity, photos, or other records that could support an investigation or legal case.
  5. Consult with a child sex trafficking lawyer. An experienced attorney can help guide your family through the criminal justice process and any potential civil claims for damages, while protecting your child’s rights.
  6. Explore victim compensation options. California offers victim support funds and services that may help cover medical, counseling, relocation, and legal expenses.
