San Jose, California — A rideshare driver has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault involving a juvenile passenger in downtown San Jose. Police say investigators are also seeking information from anyone who may have experienced a similar incident involving the suspect.
Rideshare Driver Arrested After Alleged Assault in Downtown San Jose
San Jose police responded shortly after 10:30 p.m. on September 12 to the 100 block of Paseo de San Antonio after receiving a report involving a juvenile rideshare passenger. Investigators allege that 32-year-old Anuj Kumar, the driver assigned to the trip, sexually assaulted the teenager inside the vehicle.
Police used automated license plate reader information to identify the vehicle and suspect. Kumar was arrested the following day with assistance from Foster City police and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of sexual assault of a minor.
Authorities believe there could be additional victims and are asking people with information about similar encounters to contact the San Jose Police Department Sexual Assaults Investigation Unit.
