R. Kelly’s Royalties Garnished to Compensate Sex Trafficking Victims

Brooklyn’s federal court ruled on Wednesday that royalties exceeding $500,000, accrued by R. Kelly, will be garnished to settle payments for his sex trafficking victims. Universal Music Group (UMG), having retained these funds since Kelly faced charges for sex trafficking and child pornography in multiple cities, has been directed to remit $520,549.

Initially, both UMG and Sony Music Entertainment were pinpointed for the garnishment. However, with UMG’s possession of $567,444, they singularly met the entire debt, exempting Sony from the claim.

Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s attorney, signaled an appeal against his convictions and expressed intent to “seek the return of every cent that has been wrongfully taken from him.” Convicted in September 2021, Kelly was found guilty of leading a prolonged sex trafficking operation targeting young, often underage, fans. Despite his 30-year prison sentence and imposed fine of approximately $500,000, Kelly declared financial insolvency.

This garnishment, sanctioned by Judge Ann Donnelly, is anticipated to be one of many concerning Kelly’s finances. A victim who sued Kelly in a civil lawsuit was awarded $4 million, an amount yet unpaid. Other claims on Kelly’s assets include a Chicago landlord demanding $3.5 million in overdue rent and a separate $42,000 fine linked to Kelly’s convictions in Chicago.

The R Kelly sex trafficking case has brought about a reckoning for the singer whose career had been tarnished by decades of allegations. It is yet unclear if Kelly will be able to pay any fines or fees associated with his criminal activity, and many are concerned that he will not be held accountable for his actions.
