Zephaniah “Zephi” Trevino, once a thriving student and athlete, has been sentenced to 12 years for murder and aggravated robbery. The incident occurred in August 2019 at a Grand Prairie apartment, where Carlos Murillo, 24, was fatally shot. Zephi’s parents allege that Phillip Baldenegro, the main suspect, was trafficking their 16-year-old daughter for sex.
Baldenegro, together with Jesse Martinez, now awaits trial for capital murder. Authorities believe the duo lured Murillo and Christian Lobo to the apartment, brutally assaulted, and robbed them. It’s claimed that Baldenegro shot Murillo while defending Zephi after Murillo allegedly grabbed her.
In contrast, Baldenegro’s attorney, David Finn, asserts that Zephi wasn’t a sex trafficking victim. Zephi’s life took a downward spiral after a teenage relationship introduced her to drugs and abuse. Her mother shared that Zephi’s vulnerability made her an easy target for Baldenegro, who deceived them about his age and intentions.
