Rigoberto Hernandez Latin, 44, and Maria Olimpia Hernandez, 33, of Phelan, California were apprehended on allegations of human trafficking, child abuse, and various other related crimes. This follows a comprehensive investigation carried out in July by the Specialized Investigations Division-Crimes Against Children Detail and the Victor Valley sheriff’s office.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department identified the pair as primary suspects but hasn’t disclosed the total number of victims. The duo’s arrest, made on August 11, was announced recently, with both being detained at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto.
Charges sought against the couple include human trafficking, forced lewd acts on a child under 14, false imprisonment, and intimidating a witness or victim. Latin’s bail stands at $880,000, while details about Hernandez’s status remain unclear.
Given the gravity of the accusations, a conviction could see them serving life sentences. Authorities, suspecting the existence of more victims, have shared the couple’s photographs to aid the investigation.
The human trafficking and child abuse scandal sheds light on the prevalence and gravity of abuse happening in California. But you can take part in the fight to stop these.
