Merced County authorities have unearthed a human trafficking operation linked to a local marijuana farm. Deputies executed a search warrant on Wednesday at a Vassar and Tyler Road residence where they found 60 individuals, who were later identified as victims of human trafficking, processing a substantial quantity of marijuana.
According to detectives, these individuals were smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border under the false promise of lucrative jobs and decent housing. Upon arrival, however, they found themselves ensnared in a life of forced labor, processing marijuana to repay their traffickers.
The site also housed several neglected animals, which have since been removed. Child Protective Services intervened on behalf of a child found on the premises who was then released to a parent. As the investigation continues, county officials are extending resources to the affected men and women.
The Merced County human trafficking task force has launched a full-scale investigation and is committed to prosecuting those responsible. They are also providing the victims with access to support services, mental health counseling, assistance with filing for visas, and referrals to other social services. This critical intervention will help ensure that these exploited individuals receive the care they need to reclaim their freedom.
