Megachurch Leaders Indicted in Federal Sex Trafficking Case

California – Federal prosecutors have charged leaders of La Luz del Mundo, a Mexico-based megachurch, with sex trafficking and racketeering. The indictment names the church’s current apostle, his mother, and several associates, accusing them of abusing their positions of power to commit widespread misconduct. Authorities say victims were trafficked across the U.S. and internationally, with some as young as 13 years old.

Decades of Alleged Abuse Brought to Light

Six leaders of La Luz del Mundo, including Naasón Joaquín García and his 79-year-old mother, now face federal charges of racketeering, child pornography, and sex trafficking. García, who is already serving a 16-year sentence in California for state sex abuse charges, was transferred to federal custody when the indictment was unsealed.

Prosecutors accuse the group of systematically abusing members over decades, using religious authority to silence victims. Searches of family homes in East Los Angeles revealed hidden safes filled with cash, gold, and luxury items, underscoring the scope of the alleged operation.

Understanding Sex Trafficking Claims

Cases like this highlight the serious consequences of sex trafficking under U.S. federal and California state law. Survivors may have both criminal and civil remedies available:

  • Criminal Accountability – Under federal law (18 U.S.C. §1591), sex trafficking involving minors or coercion carries severe penalties, including lengthy prison terms.
  • Civil Claims – Victims may pursue compensation for damages, including medical care, counseling, lost income, and pain and suffering.
  • Statute of Limitations – California allows extended filing periods for trafficking survivors, recognizing that the trauma often delays disclosure.
  • Protective Measures – Courts may order restitution, property forfeiture, and protective services to safeguard victims.

These laws aim to address both offenders’ punishment and survivors’ long-term support.
