Manhattan gynecologist, Robert Hadden, 64, is set to be sentenced to 20 years in prison for sex-trafficking charges. A federal judge announced the decision after 11 victims delivered emotional testimonies detailing the impact of Hadden’s prolonged abuse. One victim, using the pseudonym Emily Anderson, called him a “sexual predator disguised in a white coat.”
Convicted in January on all four counts, Hadden deceived women to cross state lines so he could abuse them. His reprehensible actions occurred at esteemed hospitals linked to Columbia University and New York-Presbyterian. Initially, Hadden faced up to 80 years in prison.
Prosecutors in the Robert Hadden patient abuse case pushed for at least 25 years, while his defense requested a lenient 3-year term. Evidence revealed that Hadden carried out up to 310 instances of abuse on numerous patients during his tenure from 1987 to 2012.
Over 200 former patients sued the hospitals Hadden was affiliated with, resulting in a staggering $236 million settlement. In 2016, Hadden admitted to abusing six patients in a state case, leading to the loss of his medical license and sex offender registration. Shockingly, he evaded jail time.
One survivor, Laurie Kanyok, highlighted the enduring trauma, expressing her fear about her daughter’s upcoming gynecological care due to her own traumatic experience with Hadden.
Hadden’s defense claimed his prior state conviction should prevent a federal one and that he wasn’t aware of his victims’ state line crossings.
