Five individuals are facing multiple felony charges related to human trafficking for prostitution in Kane County, as authorities cracked down on a brothel operating in St. Charles and its connection to a larger criminal enterprise operating in several cities.
The investigation led to the rescue of ten women, who were taken into protective custody and provided with transitional housing. According to St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan, the women, all over 18 and from different parts of South America, were victims of human trafficking, but none were minors.
Daniel Hurtado, Christian Hurtado, Martha Hurtado-Hernandez, Rigoberto Parra, and Hector Briseno were arrested and charged with various felonies, including involuntary servitude, trafficking in persons, and promoting prostitution. These charges carry sentences of up to 30 years in prison.
During the early morning raid, heavy police activity was observed in the area, leading to the arrest of the suspects involved in the sex trafficking ring. Neighbors expressed shock at the discovery, emphasizing concerns for the safety of their children.
The evidence gathered in the investigation indicated that the victims were brought into the United States to be exploited as part of a larger human trafficking syndicate engaging in forced sex work. The suspects allegedly physically restrained the victims and used threats to force compliance.
A special bond hearing was held for the defendants, and they are all currently held on a $5 million bond.
Although the human trafficking raid happened in this state, sex trafficking is not exclusive to this area. Cases of human trafficking and prostitution have been reported in California as recently as 2019, with some of the victims being minors. Sex trafficking is a major issue in California, given its proximity to the border of Mexico and its high population. Victims of sex trafficking can exhibit signs including fear and anxiety, depression, or physical injuries such as bruises and cuts.
