California Government Grants $20 Million to MMIP

Sacramento, California – Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state has awarded nearly $20 million in grants to 18 Native American tribes in California.

These funds are aimed at supporting these tribes’ efforts to address the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP).

Too many Native individuals, many of them women and girls, are missing with no answer,” said Newsom. “Behind every Missing and Murdered Indigenous Person case is a family and community grieving the loss of a loved one.”

These grants will help MMIP provide support to victims’ families. The funding will also enable tribes to implement strategies to prevent the disappearance and murder of Indigenous people.

These efforts mark a crucial step towards justice and support for Native American communities in California. By recognizing the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons, the state reaffirms its commitment to the protection and well-being of all its citizens.
