Los Angeles, California — A Simi Valley couple faces charges of exploiting asylum-seeking immigrants from Latin America, compelling them into domestic servitude and financial exploitation, authorities announced today. Carolina Rojas, 50, and Jairo John Gastelo, 45, were arrested and indicted on counts of conspiracy and forced labor. Rojas also faces additional charges, including trafficking and document fraud.
The indictment alleges the couple recruited foreign nationals, beginning in November 2021, for forced labor upon their arrival in the United States. Rojas reportedly facilitated their entry, providing financial aid and travel arrangements. Upon arrival, victims were allegedly forced to provide childcare and perform domestic tasks without pay under the guise of rent payment.
Furthermore, the couple reportedly charged victims fees for smuggling them into the country. Rojas is accused of arranging employment at a local McDonald’s, where victims’ wages were collected as repayment.
The indictment states that fraudulent documents were procured to facilitate outside employment, with the couple collecting the resulting earnings. If convicted, the accused faces potential decades of imprisonment. A trial is scheduled for April 8.
