In a breakthrough provincial human trafficking investigation dubbed “Project Chance,” law enforcement agencies have apprehended a 40-year-old Barrie resident who now faces seven charges. The investigation, initiated at the start of 2023, followed a tip regarding suspected human trafficking activities.
According to police, an international female student fell victim to exploitation within the sex trade through an online advertisement posted by a company called “Scarlet Room Agency.” The agency claimed to offer security and training services to sex workers. While one victim has been identified, authorities suspect there may be additional victims yet to be discovered.
The arrest, carried out by the Provincial Human Trafficking Intelligence-Led Joint Forces Strategy, took place on May 25. The accused has been charged with various offenses, including exercising control over a person, benefiting from sexual services, advertising sexual services, and assault. The accused is currently in custody, awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for June 7 at the Bradford Courthouse.
Law enforcement agencies are urging anyone with information related to the Barrie human trafficking probe to contact the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) at 1-888-310-1122.
