Prosecutors said Vilchez Lazo targeted young women between 2013 and 2018 by posing as a rideshare driver outside bars and nightclubs. He allegedly picked up women waiting for rides and took them to isolated locations, where the assaults occurred.
The investigation gained momentum after DNA evidence from a 2018 assault was linked to evidence collected in a 2013 case. Additional assaults were subsequently connected through forensic evidence.
Police identified Vilchez Lazo in July 2018. He was later convicted of felony charges involving rape, kidnapping, and sexual penetration.
